Headaches that start somewhere other than your head
Some headaches come from the neck and the base of the skull, and they behave differently from the ones that do not.
There are a few things worth checking first
The pattern people describe
It starts at the base of the skull and comes up over the back of the head. It is worse after a long drive, a bad pillow, or a day at a screen. Turning your head changes it. It is often on the same side every time.
If that sounds like yours, the neck, the upper back and the muscles at the base of the skull are worth an hour of somebody's attention.
What I do not do
I do not diagnose headaches and I do not treat migraine. Those are medical questions and there are people whose job that is. What I work on is the muscular tension that often accompanies them.
Questions
Can massage cure my headaches?
No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. What I work on is the neck and upper back tension that often travels with them.
Should I come when I have one, or between them?
Between, usually. Working on someone mid-headache is often too much. If you wake up with one on the day, call me and we will move it.
What about my pillow?
Ask me. It is the single most common thing I end up talking about, and it costs nothing to change.
